Addition/Subtraction Strategies with Larger Numbers

4.NBT.B.4 Add and subtract within 1,000,000 using appropriate strategies and algorithms
WHY? Students need to be able to explain how the value of a digit in one number compares to the value in another using appropriate vocabulary. Students should discover the patterns occurring in the value of the digits as they move from one place to the next. Once this understanding is solidified, students will use this knowledge to compare numbers and then to solve addition and subtraction problems using various strategies that were developed in earlier grades and are only extended here to include larger numbers.
